QUEEN, BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

Task 1: Product analysis. Semiotic analysis of 4 music videos (two from COLUMBIA record label, two from PARLOPHONE) using the technical codes, conventions of Music Video with reference to Goodwin (ML), representation(Rep), record label (Ind), audience and how this is targeted (Aud).

TECHNICAL CODES

CAMERAWORK - the music video utilizes a lot of zoom in to help elevate the visual aspect of the music video, it uses a lot of mid shots to capture the bands facial expression and key moment of their performance to make the audience feel like they were they are there

EDITING - at the time the video was made the editing was the best the world has ever seen with a lot of fade edits and lots of colour experimentation they showed a whole new side to the band which helped them gain a lot of audiences

AUDIO - the music video does not have any other additional sounds but only the music in addition the music doesn't add up with the visuals. There is a slight static but this is due to the nature of the equipment used in the video

LIGHTING - the lighting is very experimental with a lot of use with the fill light to illuminate the bands faces this here evokes a godly tone also the uses of stage lighting in their video made it seem that they were there.

AUDIENCE

The band were supposed to be on a live stage unfortunately they couldn't make it so to make up for their slot they made a music video to show to show to the audience which at the time was unique and different. Audience is targeted through mise en scene, the editing and lighting use was something audiences have never seen before and were attracted to its use, the mode of address is that the band are almost performing live to them and this allowed audience to be entertained

INDUSTRY

at the time the music video was produced the production value of the video would have been very much high end as editing and lighting looks all professional, the ways it was distributed allowed for the band to reach out to audiences much further than regular live performances as the music video was released onto Tv and website streaming services like youtube

REPRESENTATION

through aspects of genre representation is almost subverted, the rock band representation is subverted as the costume is different to conventional rock outfits bands would wear in addition to this the song would fit the overall category the band falls in which is rock as the song consist of multiple genres challenging the traditional rock style

GOODWIN

Goodwin theory doesn't really apply to this music video has the lyrics don't match with the visuals, as the video was there to impress a live audience…
